It’s DIY Friday again, and for this edition I thought I’d share my own recipe for some really simple homemade laundry soap. I love this soap recipe because (a) it’s inexpensive, and (b) it doesn’t contain any harmful, toxic ingredients. We’ve been using this laundry soap recipe for about a year now and no longer have any issues with eczema and skin allergies. Of course we have made other changes in our lives too with regard to the kinds of products we use on our skin and the kinds of foods we eat, but switching from regular laundry soap and dryer sheets to an all natural alternative has made a huge difference in our lives. We’re much healthier now – no more dry, itchy skin – and we’re saving money too. Here’s what you’ll need to make your own all-natural laundry soap:
- Distilled white vinegar
- Baking soda
- Dr. Bronner‘s pure castille liquid soap, diluted into a gallon-sized container (2 tablespoons to 1 gallon of water)
First, take the gallon jug and fill with water, leaving room to add 2 tablespoons of Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap. (I find that adding the water to the container first works much better than adding the soap first. This way, you don’t have to contend with soap suds spewing out of your jug before it’s completely filled.) Put cap on and shake well.
Next, add laundry to washing machine as usual. Add to your laundry load:
- 1 cup diluted Dr. Bronner’s mixture
- 1 cup distilled white vinegar
- 1/2 cup baking soda
For very large loads, or wash that is heavily soiled, I add more baking soda (great for cleaning, whitening, and getting out odors), and a little more of the Dr. Bronner’s. I prefer to use the lavender Bronner’s, but of course any of their soaps will do. Dr. Bronner’s is an excellent, organic, fair-trade choice. We use it for nearly everything around our house, and LOVE it!
