Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop – check it out, it’s fabulicious!
Here’s the prompt I chose for today’s workshop linkup: Earthquake! Where were you when it happened?
Living in California most of my life, (five university years out of state), I’ve experienced my fair share of earthquakes. The one that sticks out in my mind the most, is the 1989 San Francisco quake that happened during the World Series. I can still remember it like it was yesterday. I was all cozied up on the couch watching the game, my mom busy with something in the kitchen, when all of a sudden I could feel the house shake – a rolling, wavelike motion. Plants were swaying, nic nacs and tchotchkes were were rattling, and I could see it all happening live on television. It was all rather surreal. It’s one thing to experience an earthquake – it’s completely bizarre to experience it firsthand and also see it happening in real time on live television.
Although I didn’t live close to the epicenter of the quake, we still had a good shaking in the Central Valley where I lived at the time. Family started calling right away to see how we were, to see if we had felt the quake, and to ask if we had seen the events unfolding on TV. I remember my brother, who’s a musician and was away on tour at the time, calling from whatever state he was in to see if we were alright. His wife and new son were home alone when the quake hit. It shook my sister-in-law up a bit, especially with a one month old baby in tow. My mom, being the wonderful granny she is, went to check on them, make sure they were alright (I think it was just another excuse to see her first grandson though
).
Years later, after I met my husband, we discussed this quake. Where we were, what we were doing, that sort of thing. We found we had shared in an experience, shared a moment in time without having known one another yet. It’s an interesting thing when something like that happens. To know you’ve experienced something with someone you love when you hadn’t yet met that person.

I was so glad that my hubby felt it to! Cause I really didn’t know what was going on
My kids didn’t even feel it at school. They were playing outside and never even noticed.
Angie recently posted..EARTHQUAKE!
Thanks for stopping by Angie. Earthquakes are crazy! I’ve felt so many of them living in California, but when I was attending university out of state I experienced an earthquake, and although it was relatively small, it still freaked me out a bit. Of course I was pregnant with my son at the time, so those motherly instincts were already kicking in. My husband didn’t feel it, but humored my anxiety anyway. It was the talk of the biology department where I was working at the time – they weren’t used to quakes so it was exciting for them – not for me though.
Visiting from Writer’s Workshop and wow, we were on the same page. It truly was the most memorable earthquake. I am glad now that they are less memorable because that should mean there was less damage, but I’ll take an earthquake over other natural disasters any day!
Thanks for the visit Loni. Yeah, it’s something I won’t forget. I’ve had my fair share of quakes, but I think it will always be memorable because I watched all unfold in real time on television. It was crazy!
Thanks for stopping by, and for taking the time to comment. Peace.
