The Worst Sunburn…Ever!

It’s time once again for another of Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop prompts.  If you don’t know about Mama Kat yet, where have you been hiding?  Her workshop is terrific.  Check it out!

This week’s choice brings back painful memories…literally.

It was a bad burn. Tell about the worst sunburn you ever received. How did that happen!?!

Ah, the folly of youth.

I was always a smart kid.  You know the type.  The kid who always did the extra credit assignments and didn’t chew gum in class because it was against the rules.  That was me.  I always listened to my inner goody-two-shoes growing up.  Never drank, never smoked, never did drugs.

I was never the kind of kid who took risks, pulled pranks, or did anything daring.  Stupidity wasn’t listed on my teenage resume, and yet I did one of the dumbest things a person can possibly do.

Here’s some advice: Never ever paint a bookcase on a cloudy day in the middle of May wearing a two-piece bathing suit!  You. are going. to get. a sunburn.

OK, I’ll admit I really did know better than to paint all day long wearing only a bathing suit, but that urge to get a really good tan for high school graduation kept getting the better of my logical side.   I knew I might get a little sunburned, but I ended up cooking myself!

My parents warned me, and that inner goody-two-shoes kept telling me to go in the house – but did I listen? No.  I ended up looking like a lobster by nightfall, and could barely sleep because my skin hurt so badly.  I slathered my body with Noxzema, my mom’s sunburn remedy of choice in those days, and swore I’d never try to tan ever again.

By graduation the burn had healed, and the awful skin peeling had ceased.

These days, you won’t ever catch me outside in the sun without being covered up from head to toe!  Tanning is so not worth it.

What about you?  What’s your worst sunburn memory?

  1. OUCH! I was (who am I kidding? still am!) the goody-goody girl, too! Rule following, people pleasing, etc. And I burn easily! I have photos somewhere of me on our parents’ boat with a baseball cap on, my sweatshirt hood over the hat, the strings drawn tight to cover my face, and sunglasses– all to protect my face from getting burned. (Sunblock didn’t cut it apparently.)

    • Boy that sounds familiar! The sun and I don’t have a really great track record. Sunblock doesn’t work for me either.

Thanks so much for the visit, and for taking the time to leave a comment!

      Peace. ;)

    • So true Jackie! But then when we have children of our own we get our just desserts when they don’t listen to us. That’s the circle of life I guess…lol.

    • Thank you, Cheryl. Yes, it definitely wasn’t worth it. I’m very happy being the color that God made me…lol.

Thanks for the compliment on the design. I’ve been tweaking it here and there, but really want to delve into designing my own. Until then, my Arras Theme will have to do.
