DIY Homemade Trail Mix

I’m nuts over trail mix!

One of my all time favorite snacks is trail mix.  It’s quick, easy, cheap, and best of all my kids will gladly eat it.

Buying trail mix at a grocery store can be pricey, and sometimes contains ingredients that someone in the family probably won’t like.  Making your own trail mix at home is simple, cost effective, and very tasty.

Here’s my recipe for some easy DIY homemade trail mix.  Feel free to substitute your favorite nuts, seeds, or dried fruit for the ones called for in this recipe.  Experiment with different ingredients, and get the kids involved.  Kids love making things in the kitchen, and it’s the perfect opportunity to teach kids the importance of maintaining a healthy diet.  Enjoy! ;)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup roasted, salted sunflower seeds
  • 1/2 cup roasted, unsalted almonds
  • 1/2 cup roasted, unsalted peanuts
  • 1/2 cup sweetened dried cherries
  • 1/2 cup Thompson raisins (or other if you prefer)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened flaked coconut (unsulfured, all natural – the sweetened kind you find at most conventional grocery stores contains propylene glycol, which is basically industrial anti-freeze – Yikes!)
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (you can also use carob chips if you prefer)

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and pour into an airtight container or bag.  Gather up your kids or other loved ones and go outside for a nature walk! ;)

    • Yummy! I’ll have to remember to check that out – I love granola!

You’re so right – moderation is the key to all things, even things as healthy and good for you as trail mix. ;)
