Pearls fascinate me. They’re so organic and alive – no two are exactly alike. Their beauty and their luster draw me into them, and I find myself staring at them for long periods of time – their beauty relaxes me.
I love creating my own jewelry pieces using fresh water pearls. They always add a beautiful, feminine, earthy touch to whatever piece I add them to.
What was once a gemstone coveted and worn by the wealthy, pearls are now fairly easy to acquire at an affordable price. I purchased the potato pearls used in this necklace from a Michael’s craft store, and paid about $5.50 per package.
Here’s What You Need to Make Your Own Pearl Necklace:
- 8-9 mm potato shaped fresh water pearls (the pearls in this piece are a cross between a pistachio color, and a platinum – this necklace contains 49 pearls)
- Small glass seed beads or rocailles (the glass beads in this piece are clear with a silver foil on the inside – this necklace contains 50 glass seed beads)
- Lobster claw clasp (the clasp in this necklace in sterling silver)
- 2 round metal spacer beads (the spacers in this necklace are approximately 3 mm, and are sterling silver)
- 2 crimp beads (the crimps in this piece are silver plated)
- Beading wire
- Crimping pliers
- Cutting pliers or scissors (cutting pliers are best for getting a very close cut, however)
- Measuring tape
- Beading board (optional, but a bead board makes stringing much easier)
First figure out the length you want your finished necklace to be. For my project I wanted my finished piece to be approximately 18 inches in length.
Next, add 5 inches to your desired length and cut off this amount of beading wire. Adding five inches to your wire length is a good rule of thumb. This gives you room to easily add or subtract beads before finishing.
Now that you have your beading wire cut, add pearls and glass seed beads until you have reached your desired finished length. Once you have reached the end of your wire, string a metal spacer, crimp bead, and part of your lobster claw clasp at each end of your necklace.
String your wire back through the clasp, crimp bead, space, and 3 or 4 of the glass beads and pearls (this helps secure your finished necklace). Now tighten your necklace at both ends, being careful not to over tighten. Crimp your crimp beads carefully, and cut off your remaining wire with the cuttin pliers.
Viola! You now have a beautiful fresh water pearl necklace to keep for yourself or give to someone you love as a lovely handmade gift. Enjoy!
