So Long Old Friend, Don’t Let the Door Hit You on the Way out!
A couple of weeks ago I decided to have my husband pack up our microwave oven and put it in our tool shed. You may think I’m silly, a little paranoid even, but I haven’t been comfortable with the idea of nuking my food for a long time. I figure it isn’t natural (it’s radiation for goodness sake) and therefore can’t be that good for you. What’s happening to the nutrients in the food? We’re already living in a time in which the foods we eat are contaminated with pesticides and chemicals, and don’t contain the same quality of nutrients they once did.
Our household has never been one to cook a meal in the microwave – I’ve always thought meals cooked in a microwave tasted awful. We’ve really only used our microwave in the past to reheat leftovers, or heat up a cup of water for tea. It’s main function in our home has been as an oven timer.
We started weaning ourselves off the microwave a little more than a year ago, and have come to discover just how convenient the traditional oven and stove-top really are – plus, after ten years I’ve finally discovered how to use my oven timer.
It doesn’t take more than a couple of minutes to boil water in a teapot for tea, or heat up some homemade soup leftovers on the stove-top. The food tastes so much better cooked on the stove or warmed in the oven – I can’t believe I ever used a microwave in the first place. I guess it’s because they were the new “it” thing back when my husband and I were kids in the early eighties. It became a fad and then a household staple over time. Getting back to cooking with a traditional oven is pretty cool, plus it’s natural (and we all know how much I like that!).
Here are some articles for further reading about the potential dangers of microwave ovens.

Thanks so much for your kind words Terra – they really mean a lot.
I’m so glad to be rid of my microwave for so many reasons, plus I now have a little more counter space which is another added bonus. Thanks for the visit, and for taking the time to leave a comment.

That is terrific! Thinking back on it, we really only use ours for reheating leftovers and heating up water for coffee/tea. It would be a good idea to try to live without it. Boiling water is just as easy and I bet oven-reheated food tastes much better!

uhoh. This has been on my mind quite a bit lately and while I never use the microwave, my kids and husband do use it for reheating… I could really use the counter space though and I don’t love the idea of radiation either. Argh.

Hi Christine,
Maybe you can slowly wean your household off of it. I didn’t think my kids would go for it being gone, but they don’t mind it at all.

Good for you! I have stopped using my microwave as much as possible. I wish I could just chuck it. But it is a built in model. So it does get used occasionally due to convenience. I use my small toaster oven to reheat leftovers! Works awesome!

Hi Angie,
Using a toaster oven is a great idea. I had one but never used it so I donated it to a local thrift store.
Thanks for the visit, and for the comment.
