Get Back to Nature
Is your food chain healthy? Is it local? These are questions we should be asking ourselves. In this short video clip, author Michael Pollan explains just exactly what a food chain is, and why we should care.
If Your Food Chain’s Broken, Fix It
Are there areas along your food chain that need some work? Nourish offers some excellent tips and advice for getting your personal food chain back on track.
At my house we do our best to support a sustainable, healthy food chain. We buy as much organically grown food as we can afford, buy local whenever possible, and try to supplement our dietary needs with food we grow ourselves. It certainly isn’t easy to be sustainable 100 percent of the time when you’re living on very limited resources. If that’s your situation (like ours), don’t despair. You can still make small changes in your life that will benefit you and make a positive impact on the environment too.
Take the time to reflect on how and what you buy. Find recipes, plan meals, make shopping lists (and stick to them), read books like Food Matters by Mark Bittman, and use the Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides from the Environmental Working Group when you shop. Know what resources are available in your area like farmers markets and CSAs, and connect with others in your community and online who are interested in living and eating sustainably. It’s amazing how many smart, creative, wonderful folks are out there in the world just waiting to give some good tips and advice.
