Unfair Food Fights
I pay attention to food news like many people do – these days you have to. So a couple of food headlines caught my attention this week. It all adds up to more greenwashing, health food fiction, and dietary nightmares – but with the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) what you see isn’t necessarily what you’re getting.
McDonalds News
A few days ago McDonalds announced to the public that they will be making some improvements to their menu. According to their press release, McDonalds is committed to offering improved nutrition choices to its customers. While that sounds great I still wouldn’t eat anything from their restaurants. Adding apple slices to happy meals (which probably aren’t organic and top the dirty dozen list) doesn’t make their menu items any healthier. If you haven’t watched the documentary Super Size Me yet, you need to. Let’s not forget the french fry experiment Morgan Spurlock did in his groundbreaking documentary – McDonalds fries don’t decompose - yikes!
100% Pure Greenwashing
If you think that “100% orange juice” you’re drinking is really made from 100% orange juice think again. It seems that some companies claiming their juice is 100% OJ are serving consumers a big cold glass of artificial - more labeling sleight of hand at the consumer’s expense. But if you’ve ever tasted freshly squeezed orange juice you’re probably able to tell the difference. My advice – juice your own oranges and avoid the additives.
High Fructose Heart Attack
If you need yet another reason to ditch the high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) here it is – according to a recent study high fructose corn syrup increases the risk of heart disease. Read labels folks – HFCS is in all kinds of products, and since it comes from corn it’s probably genetically modified too.
Cast Your Vote for Better Food Choices
I know it’s tough trying to make sense of all the nutrition information and disinformation that we’re constantly being inundated with – it’s enough to make you want to stop caring about your food choices altogether – but defeat isn’t an option when it comes to your health.
It is possible to eat a wholesome, healthy diet however, and with a little planning, patience, and good food advice, you can easily make sense of the grocery aisles (even if you live on a very tight budget like we do). Take the time to learn what food labels mean, what the risks of pesticides are to your health, and why it’s a good idea to avoid heavily processed foods and foods that contain genetically modified ingredients. Remeber you control what goes into your body.

I believe that avoiding highly processed foods will be the first step for you to lose weight. They may taste fine, but processed foods currently have very little nutritional value, making you feed on more just to have enough strength to get over the day. In case you are constantly consuming these foods, switching to whole grain products and other complex carbohydrates will let you have more strength while feeding on less. Interesting blog post.
