GMO Watch: Agent Orange Corn is Coming!

Tell the USDA You Don’t Want Agent Orange Corn!

Have you heard about this?  A new type of genetically engineered corn has been developed which is resistant to a component of Agent Orange (2,4-D).  For those who may not know it, Agent Orange is the code name used for a type of herbicide and defoliant used by the U.S. military as part of its herbicidal warfare program during the Vietnam War.  It is HIGHLY TOXIC!  2,4-D has been linked to serious health effects following consumption of foods containing these residues.

Time is Running Out!  We MUST Act Before February 27th!

We cannot let this happen!  I urge you to tell the USDA NOT to approve this genetically engineered corn developed by DOW, a chemical corporation!

You can read about Agent Orange’s lasting effects on the people of Vietnam here.  I HIGHLY recommend it.

Please help spread the word about this dangerous new corn by tweeting, liking, or sharing this post on your favorite social networks.

Do It Yourself: Homemade Non-Toxic Dish Soap

A Natural Home

I LOVE making things from scratch, but dish soap is an item I’m guilty of purchasing.  I’ve tried using diluted Dr. Bronner’s soap for washing my dishes by hand, but it wasn’t what I was looking for in a homemade dish soap – I need to see some suds to know it’s working.

Food Rules: A Short Animated Film Based on Michael Pollan’s Food Rules Lecture

This wonderful animated piece goes along with a lecture given by author and food activist, Michael Pollan.  It makes the information given by Pollan easy to understand and dare I say easy to digest.  (Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.)  I first saw this video on Lisa Sharp’s Green Oklahoma website.

This film is part of the RSA/Nominet Trust Film Competition, so if you liked it thank the creators of this film by voting for them.

There’s Something in My Car and it Stinks!

Drive a lot?  You may want find out if your car is hazardous to your health.

Yet another area in life to worry about when it comes to potentially toxic chemical exposure!  It amazes me that in 2012 we’re still struggling to make our environments safe and chemical-free. Do you NOT hear us big corporations?

You can find out if your new vehicle smells like a rose or stinks to high heaven when it comes to chemical hazards.  You can also tell congress you’re sick and tired of toxic cars and demand car companies use safer chemicals – after all, it’s what we pay them for!

How does your car rate?

How to Garden: Growing Garlic Chives

Garlic Chives from Sprouted ClovesSprouted garlic cloves?  Turn them into chives for cooking!

I love garlic and keep a lot of it on hand for cooking and using medicinally.  A raw clove of garlic a day is great for your health.  Sometimes I don’t get an opportunity to use it all up before it begins to sprout – so instead of throwing into the compost pile I’ve started growing it.

GMO Watch: Nature Monsanto Style

Franken Nature Courtesy of Monsanto

I saw this on Good Girl Gone Green and had to snag this cartoon for my own blog.  It’s perfectly awful.  If you don’t know about GM foods or the campaign against Monsanto, I highly recommend doing your homework.  Your body and biodiversity will thank you.

Peace. ;)

DIY: How to Garden with Recycled Containers

Recycled Container Garden

Is this cute or what?  A great idea for re-purposing and old pair of shoes.

Reuse Old Items to Create a Beautiful Garden

Take a look through your old or unwanted items and I bet you’ll find something you can turn into a flower pot.  Or if your item is big enough, an entire container garden.  I like to save empty glass jars, large tin cans, and the empty containers that once held the raw honey I love so much.  In the past we’ve even used old plastic storage containers, large five gallon buckets, and even an old entertainment center to grow our plants and veggies.

Thrift Store Finds: Practical Surprises

Useful Thrift Store Finds

Brand new Gaiam BPA-free water bottle and a sweet little book about herbs.

Thrift Stores = Eco-Friendly Shopping

My husband took our son to take his California High School Exit Exam a couple of days ago (omg, I’m that old now…).  While he waited he killed some time at the Salvation Army.  He surprised me with a brand new BPA-free Gaiam Water Bottle – $1.39 (which I’ve seen selling at Whole Foods for nearly $20!), and a lovely little book about herbs.  He’s such a sweetie!

What have you found at the thrift store lately?

Spring Fever

Almond Tree Budding

Our Almond tree has begun to bud already because of the warm temperatures.

We haven’t had much of a winter this year in Central California.  Though it’s usually pretty mild during the winter months we still experience rain, fog, and a few days freezing temperatures that send our citrus growers into a frenzy.  This year has been exceptionally warm and dry however.  On the one hand I’m enjoying the spring-like weather, but on the other hand I’m dreading what Spring and Summer will be like.

Drought isn’t a stranger to the Central Valley by any means, but this seasons lack of rain means our farmers will be struggling to meet their water demands – it’s really quite frightening to think about.  More water wars and higher food prices will no doubt lie ahead.  In the meantime, however, I guess I’ll keep taking advantage of the good weather and enjoy as much nature as I can.

What’s the winter weather been like in your neck of the woods?
