Hummingbirds

I’m so blessed to live in a rural area surrounded by all kinds of wonderful, interesting creatures.  One of my favorite animals to observe around my home is the hummingbird, of which I’m fortunate to spot almost daily when the weather warms up.  Although they’re extremely quick, I’ve been able to capture a few fairly decent photos of these fine feathered friends.

I believe we have at least three that flit around our yard, a male and possibly two females (though one is so small I cannot judge its sex).  Their colors are simply gorgeous, especially the male of the species, which has a striking red throat, forehead, and crown.  I’ve identified them to be Anna’s Hummingbirds (Calypte anna), and we have them around our property for much of the year.  They seem to especially love the bottle brush we have planted in our front yard.

Now is the time of year to get out our bird feeders and fill them with nectar to keep these gorgeous creatures coming back for more.  You can easily make your own homemade hummingbird nectar, as well as make some DIY hummingbird feeders from recycled materials.
